Do what you love, the universe digs it

Following your gut in a situation can be hard when all evidence pointing to the fact that it will work out is in a feeling… but do we ever really know what the future has in store? The future is unknown territory, and so it is up to us to choose whether we want to go into the unknown from our intuition or from fear. When you go into the unknown from a place of fear or a place of projection, you come up with a list of ways on how the future will be safer by going down that path. It seems safer because you think that you can plan out how the future will unfold. We don’t really feel safe in the outcome, we feel safe believing that the unknown will be less unknown.

Let go of the need for an outlined future.

It can be hard for us to go with our gut, because our gut might not be able to give us that outline or glimpse of what the future may hold. When we let go of the idea that we need to know what the future will be like, it’s easier to choose the things that we genuinely love, over the things that we feel mediocre about. The things that we feel mediocre about might give us a clearer path in that moment, but if you already feel mediocre about something, it’s worth heading into the unknown and going for something that you would feel ecstatic about.

Do what you love, The Universe digs it.

Just as you want to be happy, the world wants you to be happy. When you’re doing what you love, it attracts more of that rad energy and creates a cycle; when you’re doing what you love, it gives others the permission to do the same. Not only that, it creates more opportunities for you to do what you love because you’re showing yourself and the world around you that this is how you live, this is what you expect and this is how you thrive.

I remember during college it was a massive deal what your major was, and more importantly, if you thought that your major could lead to a job after graduation. I entered into the film school my freshman year and took psychology classes as electives. Talking about positive psychology and the power of being optimistic lit my soul on fire. Comparing how I felt when I was in those types of classes to the film school were like day and night. I didn’t want to be a therapist and so I had no idea what I would do after I graduated if I went down that route. However, the thought of not doing what I love and fully enjoying myself for the next four years just didn’t sit right with me.

Today, I live in Australia and work at a social media company with co-workers that I love. One of the main reasons that I was able to be sponsored to work here was that I have a psychology degree. Doing what I love in the moment, without worrying about what the future may lead to, actually lead to a future job that I love, and that I could have never thought I would get because I had gone down the Psychology route back then.

When you do what you love, you are lead down your own pathway; you get to use your own compass. Things show up to support your decision to do what you love. It definitely pushes you to take a leap of faith, because when you follow your intuition, you’re following energy rather than a set plan. If you’re thinking about doing something that you love right now, go for it. It’s ok if you’re looking towards the future and aren’t sure how it will play out in the future. When you follow your own road map, you are lead to things that you will enjoy, because you have decided to take your bliss into your own hands. You have decided to show up for yourself, and when you show up for yourself, the world shows up for you.

  1. If only I had learned this lesson earlier! I felt the need to major in a topic that would lead to a career right after school and here it is 10 years later and I’m miserable and trying to go back to school for what I originally went to college for. As a high school cheer coach, I advise all my athletes to choose based on their interests and not on money or job security.
